Humane Society Of Huron Valley Urging Pet Owners To Take Additional Precautions

Heather LaBonte Efthymiou

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is urging pet owners to take additional precautions to keep their animals safe during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

The CDC recently issued new guidelines for pet owners after two house cats and several larger zoo animals have all tested positive for the disease in New York.

The society’s President and CEO, Tanya Hilgendorf, says the current evidence indicates the disease can be spread from people to pets, but not necessarily the other way around.

“So far, there has been no spread from pets to people.  We’ve see no evidence of that, so I really want to emphasize that,” Hilgendorf says.

Hilgendorf says, until more information becomes available, try to keep your pets inside and away from other animals outside the household, and if you are sick, make sure to maintain your distance from any of your pets.
