State Senator Jeff Irwin wants all future elections to be done entirely with absentee ballots.
Irwin has introduced a billin the state Senate that would end in-person voting and switch the state to a universal vote-by-mail system.
Under Irwin’s proposal, all registered voters would receive a ballot and then have the option of either mailing it back or dropping it off at designated location.
Irwin says similar systems are already used in several western states, including Utah, Hawaii, and Colorado.
“And they’ve been able to run safe, secure, low-cost elections out in those states for many years, so here in Michigan, I think we should learn from the best practices,” Irwin says.
Irwin says a vote-by-mail system would also cut down on environmental waste and give voters more time to review candidates and issues.
