The City of Ypsilanti will start making improvements to Frog Island Park this week as part of a pedestrian path accessibility project that includes other parts of the city.
The paved paths at Frog Island will temporarily close as construction crews widen the current paths from four feet, to about 8 to 10 feet. Bonnie Wessler is a project manager for the City of Ypsilanti and says the change will create more space for pedestrians, improve connectivity for the county’s Border-to-Border Trail, and bring the paths up to code to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Bonnie Wessler: The Frog Island path was initially built, I believe in the mid 1980’s, and these standards hadn’t been updated quite to that level yet. The ADA was passed in the 1990’s.
As part of the project, sidewalks will also be reconstructed and widened along the west side of Grove Road near the Water Street Trail. The city has not determined which day this week they will start working on the project but they hope to complete it by the fall.
