Ann Arbor's city council will discuss a proposed ordinance Thursday night that would place restrictions on short-term rentals, like Airbnb, in residential neighborhoods.
City Council Member Chip Smith from the fifth ward says the ordinance would prohibit someone who is not living in the house, but owns the property, to offer it as a short-term rental for fewer than 30 consecutive days. Smith says residents around Michigan Stadium have complained in the past about excessive noise from short-term rental occupants.
Council Member Chip Smith: Neighborhoods around the stadium, this is where we’ve seen the most turnover from housing units to Airbnb units. I mean, it’s obviously tied to events.
The ordinance would also prohibit unlicensed, short-term rentals.
