The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners will discuss a resolution Wednesday night, that, if approved, would request a Superfund site designation for the 1, 4 dioxane plume in our area.
Board ChairJason Morganintroduced the resolution after the board of commissioners rejected a consent agreement last month regarding the plume. The board said the polluter, Gelman Sciences, failed to address how it would stop the spread of the plume in Ann Arbor Township. Morgan explains what the process would be if the proposed Superfundresolution is approved.
Board Chair Jason Morgan: So, what this means is that we would send a letter to the governor and ask her to request Superfund designation of this site from the federal government through the EPA. They would ultimately have to decide to take that site on or not.
If the board does not approve the resolution, Morgan says the county will continue to negotiate with Gelman Sciences in court to clean up the site.Non-commercial, fact based reporting is made possible by your financial support.
