While the Art Fairs rages outside the doors of the Michigan and State Theaters, you can find calm during street art storm downtown by enjoying a beer and brat inside the wonderfully air conditioned Michigan Theater.
Opening Downtown
“Mr. Holmes” is a new twist on the world's most famous detective. 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger.
Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love - before it's too late. Scott Foundas of Variety says, “While the good detective himself hobbles about with a cane, "Mr. Holmes" the movie glides smoothly back and forth across decades and continents as it follows these disparate plot strands through to their eminently logical conclusions.” “Mr. Holmes” opens Friday at the Michigan.
After the Art Fairs leave town see “When Marnie Was There” from the Japanese animation Studio Ghibli. In the film that premiered during Cinetopia, Anna dreams her days away among the marshes one summer away from her foster home. She believes she's outside the invisible magic circle to which most people belong - and shuts herself off from everyone around her, wearing her "ordinary face." Anna never expected to meet a friend like Marnie, who does not judge Anna for being just what she is. But as soon as Anna begins to learn the loveliness of friendship, she begins to wonder about her newfound friend.
Based on the novel by Joan G. Robinson, “When Marnie Was There” is the newest film from Studio Ghibli and the second feature film by HiromasaYonebayashi, the director of “The Secret World of Arrietty.” Presented in both Japanese with English Subtitles and dubbed in English, “When Marnie Was There” opens after the Art Fairs July 20th at the Michigan Theater.
From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”), “Southpaw” tells the riveting story of Billy “The Great” Hope, reigning Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World (Jake Gyllenhaal). Billy Hope seemingly has it all with an impressive career, a beautiful and loving wife (Rachel McAdams), an adorable daughter (Oona Laurence) and a lavish lifestyle.
When tragedy strikes and his lifelong manager and friend (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) leaves him behind, Hope hits rock bottom and turns to an unlikely savior at a run-down local gym: Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), a retired fighter and trainer to the city’s toughest amateur boxers. With his future riding on Tick’s guidance and tenacity, Billy enters the hardest battle of his life as he struggles with redemption and to win back the trust of those he loves. “Southpaw” opens Thursday, July 23rd at the State Theatre.
Special Screenings Downtown
The Michigan Theater’s Summer Classic film series continues with one of the defining films from the 1960’s with “Easy Rider”. When two bikers set out to discover "the real America" they wind up taking the ultimate bad trip. Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson star. “Easy Rider” plays Sunday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 21 at the Michigan Theater.
Opening at the Multiplex
The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with "Ant-Man." Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. “Ant-Man” opens Friday.
In “Trainwreck,” it’s been drilled into Amy's (Amy Schumer) head since she was a little girl that monogamy isn't realistic. Now a magazine writer, Amy lives by that credo-enjoying what she feels is an uninhibited life free from stifling, boring romantic commitment-but in actuality, she's kind of in a rut. When she finds herself starting to fall for the subject of the new article she's writing, a charming and successful sports doctor named Aaron Conners (Bill Hader), Amy starts to wonder if other grown-ups, including this guy who really seems to like her, might be on to something. Directed by Judd Apatow, “Trainwreck” opens Friday.
