Dorm dinners and late night snacks with friends and roommates have been a major part of the college experience for generations of students. At U-M this has been true since its founding, and in the early 1900s the most memorable meals were formal banquets hosted by student organizations. Join us and Professor Lisa Young to learn about these banquets and how they created a sense of belonging for Michigan’s community that lasted long after graduation.

Refreshments will be provided. Part of the Making Michigan lecture series.

Lisa Young is the Volney H. Jones Collegiate Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Long interested in the history of food systems in human society she has worked on archaeological digs in the southwestern United States and researched extensively on the history of food at U-M. She attended Michigan as an undergraduate and received her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona.

Rehearsals for the Ypsilanti Community Choir’s 2026 Holiday Concert will begin on Thursday, September 17 at 7:30pm, and will be held in the basement of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to register for $40 and collect your music- doors will open at 7pm. See you there!
Our planned program will include:
Fum, Fum, Fum, In December, Selections from Christmas from the Heart, Christmas Canon, Snow, among others. There will also be our new “tradition” of a Christmas carol singalong and our traditional closing song “Hallelujah Chorus.”

Join us for an engaging interview with Erin Knott, Executive Director at Equality Michigan, an organization that educates and advocates to change Michigan laws and address issues that disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ lives. Erin is a powerful progressive activist, who has dedicated herself to championing social and economic justice and equality for all. Gather your female friends, of all ages, to take in the personal tellings of powerful, purposeful lives.

Visit the Argus Museum from August 24th to September 25th to view "What's Goin On" by Melanie Stengel. The opening reception will be September 4th from 6 pm to 8 pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

Artist statement:

"I've always felt the best photographs are felt as much as seen. As a person with ADHD, I've been lucky to find a vehicle to follow my curiosity down a host of diverse roads. I hope my photographs evoke a sense of curiosity in others and, sometimes, empathy as well."

Images will be color, black and white, and infrared.

The Argus Museum is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. The Museum is not open on weekends.
