Djangophonique is an award-winning project that delivers the infectious joy and expressive freedom that is at the heart of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club revival alive and well.
The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music and alluring to the uninitiated – a sound that can bring the lively energy of a Parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with the aching nostalgia of a shimmering ballad.
Opening for the ensemble will be Kalamazoo’s own The Birdseed Salesmen – it will be a wonderful, fun night of gypsy jazz!
Pianist Tyler Driskill presents a companion concert to his lecture series with Brent Wagner featuring timeless songs by Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. The collective contributions of these writers total nearly 80 stage shows and approximately 3,000 songs, works that have inspired generations of writers and constitute the very foundation of the Great American Songbook canon. Driskill will be joined by students from the U-M Musical Theatre Department and veteran Broadway drummer, Joe Mowatt.

Othello is a general in the United States Army. He is newly married to Desdemona. Othello’s aide-de-camp, Iago, sets out to destroy Othello by convincing him that Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio, a dashing lieutenant. Iago’s wife, Emilia, has her suspicions. This is a Shakespearean tragedy, so it doesn’t end well for anyone.
Our production of Othello is set in San Francisco and Santa Catalina, CA, in 1881.

For over 35 years, Evan Christopher has proven to be one of the world’s leading performers in the New Orleans “Creole Style” of clarinet playing. His unique “woody” sound (performed on the seldom-heard Albert System clarinet) and breathtaking command, coupled with unending musical improvisations, preserve but expand on the musical heritage of early masters of New Orleans clarinet playing such as Barney Bigard, Sidney Bechet, Albert Nicholas, Edmund Hall and Omer Simeon. His repertoire encompasses great classics of early jazz, overlooked or forgotten masterpieces, as well as his originals. Listeners will experience a living walk-through jazz clarinet history, with a look at its future as Evan presents his “Contemporary Traditional Jazz.”

Matilda the Musical is bringing MUSKET back to its big-Broadway, musical comedy roots! This charming story, based on the popular movie and book, is about a girl who is not only incredibly intelligent, but has unwavering courage! Born into a family where she is unwanted and mocked for her favorite hobby (reading), Matilda dreams about the day she will finally get to attend school. Unfortunately, this only presents additional challenges as it is run by a hilariously evil principal, Miss Trunchbull, who punishes kids in terrifying ways. Matilda, with the help of her kind teacher, Miss Honey, her classmates, and of course, her telekinetic powers, rises up. In true Roald Dahl fashion, this dark comedy is able to strike a perfect balance between humor and fear within its energetic hip hop dance numbers and an unforgettable score you are sure to leave humming!
