Art & Soul: The Culinary Arts - New Ypsi Restaurant Proves Popular Integrating Into Local Culture

This week, "Art and Soul" is about the culinary arts.  WEMU's Lisa Barry and Jessica Webster talk to one of the partners and managers at the new Bobcat Bonnie's restaurant in Ypsilanti, Brittney Gryzwa.  She describes the restaurant as having "good food, a fun environment at a fair price."

Lisa and Jessica also talk about traditional holiday food, as well as new Christmas dinner traditions.

Found at the former location of Bona Sera, Bobcat Bonnie's opened in Ypsilanti in October of 2019.  It's designed to be an old-fashioned arcade bar, complete with retro video games, pinball machines, and pool tables.

The restaurant serves various craft beers and cocktails, such as their signature "electric lemonade."  Among its specialty dishes are diner-style burgers, tots (which are a big part of Ypsilanti dining culture), and fried goat cheese appetizers.

Webster Family Rum Balls (for baking enthusiasts this holiday season, courtesy of Jessica Webster)

Ingredients

1 cup finely crushed vanilla wafers (30 - 36 wafers)

1 cup confectioner’s sugar (powdered sugar)

1 cup chopped pecans

2 tablespoons cocoa

2 tablespoons light corn syrup

1/4 cup rum (I prefer dark rum)

1/2 a cup (or more) premium chocolate sprinkles

Directions

Stir together the wafer crumbs, confectioner’s sugar, pecans and cocoa. Add the corn syrup and rum and mix well.

With wet hands, shape into 1 inch balls.(I keep a bowl of water on the table next to me to dip my hands in as I go along.)

Roll the balls in the chocolate sprinkles.

Store the cookies in an airtight container.

Makes approximately 3 dozen cookies.
