The City of Ann Arbor is moving forward with plans to increase housing density along transit corridors.
City council approved a resolution that directs the city’s planning commission to create a Transit Supported Development District. Council’s action paves the way to rezone major transit corridors, such as Washtenaw and Jackson, to allow additional housing development. Mayor Christopher Taylor says ideal developments would focus on mixed-use projects.
Mayor Christopher Taylor: It will provide for commercial uses on the first or second floor, office use and then residential use above.
The goal is to offer housing that is accessible to public transportation. Taylor says individual property owners will have to petition for areas along the corridors to be rezoned.
