Pool Closures At The City Of Ann Arbor Will Create Revenue Shortfall

City of Ann Arbor

Public pools in Ann Arbor traditionally open on Memorial Day weekend.  But the coronavirus pandemic has forced the city to cancel its 2020 pool season.

Mayor Christopher Taylor says the city could see about a $200,000 revenue shortfall as a result of closing the pools.  However, funding that’s already been allocated to operate the pools this year will remain in the Parks and Rec budget.

Mayor Christopher Taylor: We’re going to be taking this opportunity to inspect them and to determine whether we can use this time to repair them or to affect capital improvements in a way that would extend the life of the pools in the long-term.

Since the pools will be closed for the season, seasonal employees will not be hired.  As of now, it’s unknown how many employees are affected or if they will be offered other jobs within the parks department.
