Opioid addiction is ravaging all parts of the country, and Washtenaw County is no exception.  Packard Health has launched a new Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program to help the addicted.  On "Washtenaw United" this week, WEMU’s David Fair will talk with Packard Health medical director, Dr. Ankoor Soni, about the shift in perspective, from addiction as a crime issue to one of public health.

WEMU has partnered with the United Way of Washtenaw Countyto explore the people, organizations, and institutions creating opportunity and equity in our area.  And, as part of this ongoing series, you’ll also hear from the people benefiting and growing from the investments being made in the areas of our community where there are gaps in available services.  It is a community voice.  It is 'Washtenaw United.'

UWWC Statement:

  • Grant from the Washtenaw Coordinated Funders totaling $66,375/year for three years to support their Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Addiction program.
  • This is a new program launched to respond to the growing opioid crisis in Washtenaw County.
  • Packard’s comprehensive MAT Program provides a new treatment option for opioid addicts in Washtenaw County.  It operates from Packard’s Ypsilanti clinic to prioritize people with low incomes residing in zip codes 48197 and 48198.  MAT is open to anyone, regardless of income.
  • MAT differs from abstinence-only programs (Dawn Farm and Home of New Vision) or substitution programs (methadone clinics) by utilizing prescription medications that reduce addicts’ craving for opiates and blocks their ability to get the euphoric high produced by opiates.  MAT combines treatment medications with intensive behavioral and mental health therapy and extensive case management to connect opioid addicts with services to address their complex social needs.
