The coronavirus pandemic has been a stressful time for everyone, even moreso for new and expectant mothers.  In the meantime, a Washtenaw County nonprofit group called "Destiny and Purpose Community Outreach," or DAPCO, has providing special services for families in need, and the organization has a special event planned for those welcoming new babies into their lives.  DAPCO executive director Towana Parker talks about a community "baby shower" the organization is planning with WEMU's David Fair on this week's "Washtenaw United."

WEMU has partnered with the United Way of Washtenaw Countyto explore the people, organizations, and institutions creating opportunity and equity in our area.  And, as part of this ongoing series, you’ll also hear from the people benefiting and growing from the investments being made in the areas of our community where there are gaps in available services.  It is a community voice.  It is 'Washtenaw United.'

UWWC STATEMENT:

UWWC initially partnered with DAPCO in 2016-17 through an investment of $13,000 through our Financial Stability Fund to support their Passion, Potential & Purpose program to support parents and babies in need that reside in Ypsilanti.

In April of this year, we invested $20,000 in DAPCO through our COVID-19 Community Relief Fund to ensure that parents and babies in Ypsilanti had essential baby supplies and PPE available to them.

In September of this year, we invested $5,800 in DAPCO from our Power of the Purse fund to ensure they had general operating support to continue their efforts to improve the financial wellbeing of the moms with whom they work.

UWWC recognizes that DAPCO occupies a unique position within the Ypsilanti community and the fact that it is led by a woman of color as well as a board comprised by women of color.
