With Governor Gretchen Whitmer's announcement that there will be no more in-school class sessions and most scheduled events won't be taking place, one Ann Arbor high school senior, Loey Jones-Perpich, says she didn't get to celebrate the last day of school but didn't get to be sad about it either. She talks to WEMU's Lisa Barry about missing out on this rite of passage due to the current coronavirus pandemic.
The Ann Arbor Community High School senior says this week was supposed to be Spring Break, and she was planning to go visit college campuses with her family. But she says, due to thecurrent health crisis, she's not allowed on any campuses and is trying to decide where to go via virtual visits and online information.
The 17 year-old senior, who plans to go into theatre, says she's missing performing and assistant directing a high school performance, prom, and possibly graduation. But she adds that graduation at Community High is such a unique and special event, and she's hopeful school officials might be able to hold some sort of event, eventually.
Loey Jones-Perpich says she's been busy creating art, cooking, and participating in several reading clubs now that she can know longer attend school in person. She said she had been looking forward to her senior year throughout high school and is now missing out on what is typically thought of as "the best part of high school or the good part of senior year."
