Laying off the last paid employee, executive director Elisa Guyton, the Riverside Arts Center, now in its 25th year in operation in Ypsilanti, is canceling all in-person arts events through the end of the year due to the pandemic.

WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with the chair of the arts center's board of directors, Akosua Dow, about what lead to this difficult decision but how they are holding on to hope for the arts center's future.

This week, "Art and Soul" is about the local visual arts scene.  WEMU's Lisa Barry is joined by Omari Rush, executive director of CultureSource and Chair of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.  They talk with Elisa Guyton, executive director of the Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti, who has been working hard to keep the center connected to the community during a pandemic which began just a few months after she took over the job.

After years as development director at the Yankee Air Museum, Elisa Guyton is charged with taking the Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti to new heights.  Guyton began work as the center's executive director on December 2nd of last year and is becoming fully ingrained in the center’s offerings and its potential for the future.  She talks community, engagement, art, and passion in this "creative:impact" conversation with WEMU’s David Fair and Deb Polich of The Arts Alliance.
