Oil Drilling Critics Expected At Tonight's Scio Township Trustees Meeting

Scio Township Mineral Rights Meeting

Opponents of oil and natural gas drilling want to fill the Scio Township Hall for tonight's  Board of Trustees meeting.  The Township isn't expected to take any formal action, but Citizens for Oil-Free Backyards hope to have plenty of public comment.
Supervisor Spaulding Clark doesn't believe state laws give the township any say in the matter.  He's leery action taken to prevent drilling could invite legal problems.

West Bay Exploration has leases to explore for oil and natural gas on about one-thousand acres in Scio.  At a meeting last month West Bay officials promised to not use hydraulic fracturing or fracking in the township.

The township held a meeting last month to give community more information about the issue.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
