Summer's Almost Over For Holmes Elementary Students in Ypsilanti

Patrik Holubik

School starts Monday at Holmes Elementary School, where a so-called 'balanced calendar' is in place.

Ypsilanti Community Schools Superintendent Laura Lisiscki says Holmes is the only building switching to year-round school this year.  But will the rest of the district eventually follow?

"We have talked about in the following year maybe adding one more school that could possibly be a balanced calendar, and see how it goes from there" Lisiscki says.  "We want to make sure that we are always offering our parents and community choices for their children, and what best fits the needs of the children."

One of the benefits of a balanced calendar is that students have less time over a long summer break to forget what they've learned during the school year.

Balanced calendar breaks are generally shorter and more frequent, and are designed to align with other district schools.
