EMU's Board Of Regents Approves 2018-19 Budget And Tuition Increase

Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents have approved the school’s budget for the next year.

The budget includes plans for renovating several of the school’s facilities, $2.6 million in cuts to EMU’s athletics programs, and a roughly 4 percent increase in tuition and fees.

EMU President James Smith says they’re also going to start offering in-state tuition rates for international students.

“It’s fairly arbitrary that we don’t,” says President Smith.  “If you live in Massachusetts, you pay the same rate you do in Michigan, why don’t we just do it internationally?  We looked at the numbers, and Mike was quick to say 'If we get some get some growth out of this, it will maximize itself.’”

President Smith says the idea came out of EMU’s 'You Are Welcome Here' campaign and the school’s ongoing efforts to attract more international students to their campus.
