There are still a lot of questions about what's currently happening in our community with the coronavirus or COVID-19, so WEMU's Lisa Barry checks in with Michigan Medicine Infectious Disease specialist Dr. Sandro Cinti, who explains the latest information about the virus and offers reminders and practical advice on what we should be doing at this point.
Dr. Cinti says it is not clear yet if we have started to flatten the curve, or if we are getting close to doing so, but, at this point, we have to expect it's going to get worse before it gets better.
He points out that it could be weeks before we start to see a decline in the number of new cases.
But, Dr Cinti says the mortality rate for Coronavirus is still in the 1 to 2 percent range, and that while we have to acknowledge there will be deaths, 98 percent of people who contract the disease are expected to survive.
He says this about protecting the most vulnerable citizens, such as senior citizens and people with underlying health problems and people with compromised immune systems.
He adds that it is important everyone takes the necessary precautions to protect themselves, such as properly washing your hands, practicing social distancing, and staying home if you feel sick, and that we should also be doing as much as we can to help our neighbors as well.
