University of Michigan officials are predicting the school could lose up to 1 billion dollars this year due to COVID-19.

The university announced today it is placing a freeze on all new hiring and salary increases through the end of the 2020-21 budget year as part of a larger effort to shore up its finances.

Several top U of M officials, including President Mark Schlissel, will also be reducing their salaries by 10 percent through the end of the year.  The school’s athletic director and other executives will reduce theirs by 5 percent.

The university is also implementing two voluntary programs to furlough or otherwise temporarily reduce some workers' hours during the ongoing pandemic.
