The City of Ann Arbor has installed two stormwater culverts as part of the Allen Creek Railroad Berm Project that will help prevent floods in the future.
The culverts will provide flood protections for properties in the flood-prone area of North Main and Depot Streets. Robert Kellar is a spokesperson for the city and says the chances of properties flooding in that area has been reduced by about 70%.
Robert Kellar: The nature of our storms is changing; we’re getting higher levels of rain over a shorter period of time than we ever did before. So, the stormwater infrastructure that was in place was no longer sufficient.
The $9.4 million project will also include a safe pathway for the Border-to-Border Trail to cross under the Ann Arbor Railroad. That part of the project is expected to be completed by September or October.
