Washtenaw County Officials React To Voters Approving Countywide Millages

Wiki Commons

Washtenaw County voters approved both countywide millage proposals that appeared on yesterday’s primary election ballot.

Nearly 77% of voters voted in favor of renewing a four-year, 0.5 road and non-motorized millage that will improve more than 215 miles of road and build or maintain at least 10 non-motorized projects.  Sheryl Soderholm Siddall is the managing director for the Washtenaw County Road Commission.

Sheryl Soderholm Siddall: People understand the importance of local funds and the need for a good transportation within Washtenaw County.

Seventy-six percent of voters also approved a six-year .02 millage from the Washtenaw County Soil Conservation District.  Megan DeLeeuw is the group’s district manager and says millage funds will help protect groundwater quality in the county and allow their two-person employee operation to grow.

Megan DeLeeuw: Even amazing grants that we are eligible for require matching funds and staff to be able to execute that.

The conservation district is still working on a plan to determine what new positions will be created.
