The Washtenaw County Office of Community and Economic Development says they will continue their local efforts in trying to get residents to fill out the 2020 Census after a federal judge extended the deadline for the count.
Those efforts include reminding residents about the count through social media campaigns and working with community groups to encourage residents to fill out the census. The deadline was extended from September 30th to October 31st to provide more time to help reach more people of color and immigrants. Peter Lindeman is a spokesperson for the Washtenaw County Office of Community and Economic Development.
Peter Lindeman: Specifically, in areas with high number of renters, mobile home parks, areas like that. Making sure that as we’re doing outreach for other projects, for other programs that are serving the community, that we’re including census information as well.
Lindeman says that, so far, about 77% of the households in the county have self-responded to the census, which means they completed the form without the help of a census worker knocking on their door.
