Ann Arbor Public Schools continues to receive requests from many parents about options for in-person learning during the pandemic. Meanwhile, the Washtenaw County Health Department is serving as a resource for the district as it continues to monitor the situation.
Ruth Krautis the deputy health officer for the county and says officials from the health department meet twice a month with local school districts to update them on COVID-19 cases being reported in Washtenaw County. Kraut says the health department has not taken a stand on whether districts should allow in-person instruction, but that the department does have the authority to implement restrictions if they believe certain actions would impact public health.
Ruth Kraut: And that would be through a public health order. You might remember that earlier this fall we put a county based public health order that was focused on restricting gatherings in the areas of U of M and EMU.
Kraut adds that the Washtenaw County Health Department advises groups, like school districts, based on health guidelines issued by the state. Last week, the state gave the green light for high school students to return to in-person instruction.
