Ann Arbor’s youth and low-income family non-profit Community Action Network has been forced to downsize its operations due to federal budget cuts.
For the past five years, the Community Action Network (CAN) has received support from the US government program AmeriCorps. However, the loss of AmeriCorps funding due to Trump administration cuts has forced CAN to terminate $130,000 worth of summer volunteer labor and lose a $45,000 federal grant.
CAN Executive Director Derrick Miller says AmeriCorps greatly helped them assist lower-income families.
“It’s a great tool for talent development and doing the type of work that we do--community services and helping lift families out of poverty. And now it’s all gone!”
Miller says CAN anticipated that a cut like this would happen to them sooner rather than later, and thanks to community fundraising, it has softened the blow.
He adds that the City of Ann Arbor has requested $100,000 in aid to help CAN further mitigate the impact of their funding loss.
