U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin says her bill to ban Chinese vehicles from entering the United States is a matter of national security.
While no Chinese-brand vehicles are currently directly sold in the U.S., many are being sold in Mexico.
Slotkin says the electric vehicles coming from China are mobile intelligence collection machines. It’s the first bill she’s introduced as a member of the Senate.
“The bill gives the Commerce Department the ability to ban those vehicles or specific parts--Chinese parts--that could go in American vehicles that collect the data on American locations, military bases, infrastructure sites.”
Slotkin admits there is currently not a market for the Chinese cars in the U.S., but with the heavy state subsidies, American automakers would be hard-pressed to compete even with high tariffs.
