This week, "Art and Soul" is all about the culinary arts. 89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry and Jessica Webster are joined by Adam Baru, who owns three local restaurants, Mani Osteria, Isalita, and Mikette in Ann Arbor. Baru talks about the re-launching of Mikette’s menu with a Mediterranean flare.
Mikette’s new menu pulls from a cultural blend of Southern European, Middle Eastern, and North African cuisine. Baru says this twist on the traditional Mediterranean menu mixes fresh ingredients with a variety of flavors.
But the menu isn’t the only thing being revamped. Baru says he understands the importance of a restaurant as a hub for community. He says dining out is a social experience, and when people walk into his restaurants, Baru wants them to be able to see each other, so he is making some seating changes as well. Baru says, “There should be no bad seat”.
Baru also talks about food as a means of interaction and stresses the importance of the presentation of that food. Not only should the dish look appetizing on the plate, Baru says it should be presented with pride by the staff when it’s brought to a table. Some of the menu changes have already been made at Mikette on Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor, and some of the menu favorites will remain.
