The transition to adult life can be difficult for those raised in the foster care system.  The Washtenaw County-based nonprofit, "Our House," was founded to make such transitions a little easier.  However, the coronavirus crisis has made the organization's work  more challenging.  But, there are successes to champion and optimism for the future.  In this week's "Washtenaw United," Our House executive director Natasha Doan-Motsinger speaks to WEMU's David Fair about how the organization, and those it serves, are adapting.

WEMU has partnered with the United Way of Washtenaw Countyto explore the people, organizations, and institutions creating opportunity and equity in our area.  And, as part of this ongoing series, you’ll also hear from the people benefiting and growing from the investments being made in the areas of our community where there are gaps in available services.  It is a community voice.  It is 'Washtenaw United.'

ABOUT NATASHA DOAN-MOTSINGER:

As a Washtenaw County resident, Natasha enjoys making a difference in the lives of people in her community and is eager to find new and exciting ways to serve our foster care population.  In her previous work as the regional director for Excel Employment Options in Washtenaw and Livingston counties, she led the transitions, employment, therapy, and ABA services, fueling her passion for working with transition-age youth and she's excited to bring that experience to Our House.  She is a frequent speaker on transition services, is active on multiple county committees, and a member of the board of directors for the Michigan Rehabilitation Association.  She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling.

UWWC STATEMENT:

The mission of Our House, a Washtenaw County nonprofit, is to help young people (age 14-25) successfully transition from foster care to adulthood.  Most recently, UWWC funded a new program called the Home Connections.  The Home Connections pilot program is designed to connect individuals with community volunteers willing to provide a non-permanent housing solution by opening their homes to those in need, playing a critical role in addressing homelessness for our participants by mobilizing community resources and caring adults.  Due to COVID-19, this program has been delayed; however, Our House is working diligently to maintain CDC guidelines and Health department regulations to maintain safety for their clients.
