Washtenaw United: New ALICE report shows growing number of working poor in Washtenaw County
The number of working poor in Washtenaw County is on the rise. Those are employed people that don’t make enough money to cover basics like housing, food and transportation. A new report shows more than 27% of all households in Washtenaw County live in these circumstances. That’s a significant jump from pre-pandemic levels. Bridget Herrmann is Vice President of Impact and Advocacy for the United Way of Washtenaw County. She joined WEMU's David Fair with details on the report and the efforts underway to address many of the underlying issues in finding a path forward to a better future.

Issues of the Environment: Working toward a safe and usable Water Street property in Ypsilanti
For years, a 38-acre parcel of land in Ypsilanti along the Huron River has sat unused because of contamination. The Water Street property needs a developer that will take on the task of cleaning up the contamination and putting the land to beneficial use for the community. Ypsilanti City Council member Steve Wilcoxen joined WEMU's David Fair with an update on where that process stands and what comes next.

Issues of the Environment: Takeaways from Washtenaw County's '500-year, 3-hour storm'
Some areas of Washtenaw County received nearly five inches of rain in a short, three-hour period on Wednesday, August 23rd. The aftermath is still being assessed and addressed. In some areas, it could take months. Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner Evan Pratt joined WEMU's David Fair to discuss storm response and what was learned.

#OTGYpsi: Ypsilanti District Library working toward reopening downtown branch after severe flooding
The Michigan Avenue branch of the Ypsilanti District Library flooded during a severe rainstorm back in July. Its closing has been a big loss to the community, but plans are in the works to come back bigger and better. WEMU's Josh Hakala and Concentrate Media's Rylee Barnsdale caught up with downtown branch manager Joy Cichewicz for the latest.

creative:impact - Arts strengthen mental health
For thousands of years, people have used the arts for self-expression, healing and communication. It wasn’t until the 1940s, though, that the medical profession began to embrace art therapy. Dr. Mary Spence is a clinical psychologist who uses art and creativity for people of all ages in her practice. Washtenaw United: Addressing a growing need for heating and energy assistance in Washtenaw County and Southeast Michigan
What do you do in the cold of winter if you can't pay your heating bill? Sadly, thousands in the area face that crisis question. There are some resources available, and, on "Washtenaw United," you'll learn how to tap into them. Sean Scane is director of utility assistance with the United Way for Southeastern Michigan. The cost of living continues to rise, and affordable, quality childcare is at a premium. Alleviating some of that stress is the mission behind The Collaborative: Ypsilanti YMCA Child Development Center.
