Issues of the Environment: Combatting light pollution in Ann Arbor while moving toward carbon neutrality
Some of Ann Arbor's streetlights can be distractingly bright. New LED lighting is helping with the city’s A2Zero Climate Action plan, but some worry over increased light pollution. WEMU's David Fair talked with Ann Arbor City Council member Dharma Akmon about how the city can move forward while addressing sustainability and accommodating public concern.

1st Friday Focus on the Environment: Rep. Reggie Miller introduces legislation to ban toxic waste from other states
The Army Corps of Engineers wants to ship toxic waste from New York to a facility in western Wayne County. It comes from the World War II-era Manhattan Project and has low levels of radioactivity. While the shipment issue winds through the court system, measures are being taken in Lansing. State Representative Reggie Miller is a Democrat from Van Buren Township. where Wayne Disposal is located and where the shipments are scheduled to arrive. She has introduced a bill that would ban all out-of-state waste shipments and discusses it with WEMU's David Fair and Michigan League of Conservation Voters executive director, Lisa Wozniak.

Issues of the Environment: HRWC study shows mussels in Huron River will benefit over time after the Ypsilanti Peninsular Paper Dam is removed
Over the summer, the Huron River Watershed Council conducted an extensive survey of freshwater mussels in the Huron River to determine potential impacts when the Peninsular Paper Dam is removed. It found that removing the Pen Dam could release sediment, potentially smothering downstream mussel populations. Once the dam is removed, though, the river will return to a more natural state, benefiting mussel species over time. WEMU's David Fair looked at the research and its implications with Huron River Watershed Council Ecologist Dr. Paul Steen.

#OTGYpsi: Cross Street Village senior complex gets revitalized garden through Growing Hope's 'Sprout Grants' program
Earlier this year, Growing Hope announced the "Sprout Grants" program, which awards funds to organizations that promote self-reliance, self-determination, and food sovereignty through neighborhood gardening. This past September, seven Ypsilanti-area organizations received the inaugural grants, and among them was the Cross Street Village senior living facility. Cross Street community organizer Gwendolyn Copeland talks to Rylee Barnsdale about how they received the grant and their plans for the money.

Issues of the Environment: City of Ann Arbor partnering with Urban Ashes for wood repurposing plan
Tree Town is looking to find new and productive ways to avoid wasting wood. The City of Ann Arbor is partnering with the company “Urban Ashes” to repurpose storm-damaged and diseased trees. We often discuss the ecological benefits of planting and maintaining trees but rarely look at the environmental impact wood can have once it’s down. Urban Ashes CEO Paul Hickman joined WEMU's David Fair to look at the partnership, how it will work and the benefits it can provide.

#OTGYpsi: The Corner Health Center partners with Ypsilanti schools to expand student mental health services
Ypsilanti's own Corner Health Center has partnered with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on their Child and Adolescent Health Center program for the past 30 years to provide physical and mental health care to Ypsilanti's youth. But a new opportunity from MDHHS is now allowing the Corner to take its services beyond their home and into the school system. Concentrate Media's Rylee Barnsdale talks about this new initiative with Corner Health Youth Leadership Council president, Hasini Anand.

Washtenaw United: The ongoing struggle to combat domestic violence in Washtenaw County
It is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so you may see more people wearing purple. It serves as a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor, and personal dedication to domestic violence awareness. WEMU's David Fair checked in with the executive director of Safehouse Center in Washtenaw County for a picture of what is happening locally.
