A state House committeewill review a bill Wednesday which will limit the time frame to gather petition signatures to 180 days.

If passed, the bill will retroactively affect organizations aiming to add proposals to the November ballot.  The Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan wants to put an anti-fracking proposal before voters.  MILegalize wants to expand access to marijuana for adults over 21 years old.

MILegalize Board Member Jamie Lowell says the group will continue fighting to put their proposal on the ballot, even if the bill becomes law.

“This is just another seemingly obstructionist attempt to stop the existing campaign from being successful. Whether the target is specifically the marijuana reform or the anti-fracking petitioners."

He adds that what MILegalize is focusing on is "contributions to the campaign, volunteers, and more signatures.”

Ann Arbor RepresentativesGretchen Driskell and Jeff Irwin serve on the House Elections Committee, which will discuss SB 776Wednesday morning.

The Board of State Canvasserswere due to vote Monday to revise procedure on gathering petition signatures, but as Mlive reports, Vice-Chair Norm Shinkleleft the meeting before a vote could take place.

June 1 is the deadline for organizers to submit at least 380,000 valid signatures to put a proposal on the November ballot.
