WHAT'S GOING ON AT THE AADL
BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK
Elizabeth Pearce is the librarian in charge of the AADL's Blind Date with a Book program. She talks about where the idea came from, the ways in which she's executed the program in the past, and what she's looking forward to this February.
Go on a blind date... with a good book! Visit the Downtown Library this February to find Blind Date with a Book displays featuring wrapped books and movies with enticing--and mysterious--descriptions written on them. You'll have to check one out to find out what's inside! Every year, people mention that they read or watched a certain book or movie that they loved and never would have glanced at if they hadn't checked it out from the Blind Date displays. This year, you too could find a "new love!"
Younger readers shouldn't feel left out either--we have an awesome Surprise Book and Movie display for kids in the Downtown Youth Area as well.
AADL IS A FIVE STAR LIBRARY AGAIN!
The AADL is once againa Five Star Library in Library Journal's annual ratings of public libraries across the country. Based on metrics like circulation, door count, program attendance, wi-fi sessions, and more, libraries across the country earn three, four, and five star ratings. The Library Journal has been rating libraries for the last 12 years, and wouldn't you know it, the AADL has been a five-star library all 12 years.
FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH
The AADL has a slate of programs featuring local history, writers, music, film, and more this Black History Month. On February 7, we kick off the Secret Lab Inventors Series with a workshop discussing and building our own Desktop Stereo Microphone—invented by James West and Gerhard Sessler at Bell Laboratories. On February 8, we have author Debbie Taylortalking about her amazing picture book, Over in Motown! (released by Fifth Avenue Press). On February 18, we have the Motown Legends Gospel Choir in a huge concert at the Downtown Library, and Rochelle Riley comes to the Downtown Library on February 27 to discuss her book "The Burden: African Americans and the Enduring Impact of Slavery."
