Eastern Michigan University will now offer a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.  Eastern's Board of Regentsapproved the new academic program Thursday during a regularly scheduled meeting.  University President James Smith says it's a field that's in high demand in Michigan.

President James Smith: And I think that as you look at the road issue that the governor continues to speak about, you can't build new roads without civil engineers. So the infrastructure will be very important as we prepare these young women and men to go out into that field.

During the meeting, the Board of Regents also approved to phase out five bachelor's degrees.  They include Secondary Education French and Secondary Education German Language and Literature.  The move was made in response to the changing teacher education landscape.
