Separating Fact From Fear: The Local Impact Of Coronavirus From EMU Director Of Nursing Operations

Lisa Barry

Dr. Sherry Bumpus, Director of Nursing Operations at Eastern Michigan University, talks with WEMU's Lisa Barry about the spread of the Coronavirus and what actions are being taken to try and curtail the disease.

Dr. Bumpus says the decision to close major universities in the state was driven by the health department and part of a containment or mitigation plan to decrease the congregation of people wherever possible to slow down the spread of the virus.

She says people shouldn't be shaking hands or hugging other people as part of "social distancing” advice, which is a public health expression to keep viruses from spreading.

Ideally, people should stay six feet a part to stem the spread of the virus.

People most at risk are those over the age of 60, especially if they smoke, or someone who is immune-compromised, or anyone who has multiple health conditions.

Dr. Bumpus says the number of available test kits may be what showed the state with a lower number of Coronavirus cases, and as more test kits become available, that number will increase.
