The federal court has dismissed the US Department of Justice’s lawsuit against Washtenaw County over policies regarding its immigrant community.
Earlier this year, the DOJ sued the county when it refused to hand over information regarding members of its immigrant community.
In her ruling, Judge F. Kay Behm said that the county only exercised its constitutional authority under the 10th amendment.
County Commission Chair Katie Scott says it’s a great victory for the county and all communities fighting Trump Administration policies.
“This is one small county standing up and saying, ‘This is not right, and we’re not going to be part of this.' The fact that it was dismissed, I think it bodes well for people everywhere.”
Scott says she fully expects the Trump Administration will appeal the verdict. She says they can respect federal law without being compelled to do the federal government’s job for them.
