Humane Society of Huron Valley rescues 149 cats from hoarding houses

The shelters at the Humane Society of Huron Valley are inundated with cats after several rescues took place over the last two months.

149 cats were rescued from hoarding situations across four households in Washtenaw County. The cats arrived at the Humane Society of Huron Valley to be treated.

Director of Communications Wendy Welch says the cats lived in unsanitary conditions with a lot of garbage, feces and urine.

“Things were getting out of hand. Before they got out of hand even further, they reached out to us for help, so we’re very grateful they did that. A couple of instances, the authorities did have to get involved. There’s one still under investigation.”

Welch says shelters are especially crowded because more than 530 cats and kittens arrived there from a higher-than-average breeding season.

The Humane Society is waiving all adoption fees for adult cats to free up space in their shelters.
