The veterans suicide awareness organization 22 a Day has returned to Ypsilanti Township. They’re planting white crosses daily on the lawn next to the Washtenaw County Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Each cross carries the name of a veteran who took their own life. 22 crosses are being erected every day until September 18th. It symbolizes a previous estimated number of veteran suicides daily in the U.S.
22 a Day founder and Secretary-Treasurer Jon Luker says their goal is prevent all veteran suicides.
“Most of us would do the best choice we have available, and if the veterans got the help that we promised them when we joined the military in the first place, they would not have to be looking so hard for a better choice.”
22 a Day also helps families deal with the loss of a loved one. It has programs to help veterans in need of mental health care and how to recognize the warning signs of suicidal behavior.
