Michigan has garnered nationwide attention after the Secretary of State announced that absentee voter applications will be mailed out to all residents in the state.

WEMU's Lisa Barry spoke with Washtenaw County director of elections Ed Golembiewski to find out what that means for local voters and how they are preparing for the upcoming elections.

With the August primary just ten weeks away, and Michigan receiving national attention because the Secretary of State is sending out absentee ballot applications to all residents, local election officials say they are preparing for both a high number of absentee ballots and in-person voting.

About 12 percent of registered voters in Washtenaw County are already on the permanent absent voter list, according to county director of elections Ed Golembiewski.  Now, every resident will receive an application from the Secretary of State for the upcoming primary election August 4th.

Golembieski says absentee voting is more convenient and secure but adds they are also working to make polling locations as safe as they can be during our current health crisis.

Despite the pandemic, the county elections director says they are preparing for a high number of absentee ballots but, at this time, anticipate having precincts open for voting as usual.

He says they are looking for poll workers for the upcoming elections and says people can find out more and apply to be an election inspector by visiting washtenaw.org/pollworker.
