The state of Michigan has permanently lowered the eligible age for the Michigan Reconnect Scholarship to now allow anyone over 21 years old to attend in-county community college for free.

The program is open to those who have been a Michigan resident for at least one year who do not have a college degree.

Washtenaw Community College Vice President for Student Services Clarence Jennings says it’s a great program for those who joined the workforce straight out of high school but now seek better opportunities.

“They may have been a student at 18 and wasn’t thinking about school on the same level. Now they’re older. Now, there is an opportunity for them to come to the community college and basically receive a certificate or degree without incurring debt.”

A temporary program that ran from 2023-24 had a strong response. Jennings says about 750 students benefited from the original expansion and expect a large number to take advantage beginning this fall.
