Exhibit will be viewable in the month of June with the opening reception on June 5, 6 pm to 8 pm. Kelsey Kistler will be presenting her mixed media work - color, black and white, and alternative process photographs.

“I am fascinated by environmental psychology, the unconscious, and the ways in which narrative and emotion have a way of emerging even when context is scarce. There is a playfulness and embrace of unpredictability inherent to my photographic approach, especially when working with analog media. I love the drama, heartbreak, and element of chance that comes with expired film, toy cameras, unique stocks, and experimental processing. I rise equally to the challenge of digital imaging by moving away from the purely evidential: into the manipulable, the abstract, and the surreality that comes with the suspension of time. In spaces, I’m drawn to found textures and discovered geometries. When photographing people - including myself - I am always in search of a hidden internality. In snapshot photography, “candid” merely implies spontaneity, while “to speak candidly” is to express oneself directly and honestly. I’m interested in the intersection of these two definitions. Kismet is a collection of work that spans several disparate projects, but which together are all in animated conversation with these recurrent themes.” - Kelsey Wyland Kistler

The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival returns to Kerrytown Concert House this June with Measured Momentum: Music Propelled by Pulse & Precision—an electrifying evening of rhythmic drive, classical elegance, and vivid contemporary storytelling.

Pianist Gilles Vonsattel opens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s luminous Piano Sonata No. 24 in F-sharp major, Op. 78, a work of lyric intimacy and sparkling vitality. The Candide Quartet follows with Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4, a masterwork of driving rhythms, inventive textures, and bold modernism.

After intermission, ZaRiah brings vibrant color to Valerie Coleman’s Suite: Portraits of Josephine, a spirited tribute to Josephine Baker that dances through jazz-age Paris and beyond. The program concludes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Serenade No. 12 in C minor, K. 388, in a brilliant wind arrangement by Mordechai Rechtman—a work of dramatic intensity and refined interplay.

Celebrate Juneteenth and explore the stories that have shaped the African American experience at the University of Michigan. We’ll learn about the pioneering students who redefined what it meant to belong at U-M and visit the places where campus social movements like the Black Action Movement and #BBUM coalesced.

Guided walking tour developed and led by student docents from the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory. Duration: 1.5 hours; 1.4 miles.
