Ypsilanti’s city council will meet for the first time Tuesday night since former Mayor Beth Bashert resigned from office last month.
Second Ward City Council Member Steve Wilcoxen says he expects council to discuss how the change in leadership will help them move forward as a city. Wilcoxen was among the council members who asked former Mayor Beth Bashert to resign after she made a racist comment during a city council meeting in June.
Council Member Wilcoxen: We all recognize that there are a lot of things that need to be worked on and not being distracted by drama would be good.
Mayor Pro-Tem Lois Richardson became mayor when Bashert resigned. Due to the timing of the resignation, there will be no special election. Instead, the city’s next Mayor Pro-Tem, who will be appointed after the November general election, will become mayor until the current mayoral term expires in November of 2022.
