City of Saline holds off on Saline River Dam decision to ask surrounding communities

After weighing options on maintaining, restoring, or dismantling the Saline River Dam, the Saline City Council is postponing its decision until October.

The Saline City Council is seeking feedback from neighboring communities following its review of the report on the costs and logistics of maintaining the Saline Dam compared to its removal, which would lead to the drainage of Mill Pond Park.

Mayor Brian Marl says the council intends to distribute the report to affected municipalities, including York Township and Milan. He says the decision regarding the future of Saline Dam should not rest solely with Saline.

“It will indicate to them that we would welcome them to thoughtfully review all of the documentation that we provide. If they have any insights, we’ll make sure to share that with city council, and then the issue will be reconsidered.”

Marl says Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy might revise its dam preservation regulations in the next six months. He adds that if this happens, it will put additional pressure on Saline’s financial budget for maintaining the dam.
