Nearly three-quarters of David Fair’s 20+ years in radio has been at WEMU. Since 1994, he has been on the air at 5am each weekday on 89.1 FM as the local host of NPR’s Morning Edition. Over the years, Fair has had the opportunity to interview nationally and internationally known politicians, activists and celebrities. But he feels the most important features and interviews have been with those who live and work here at home. He believes his professional passions and desires fit perfectly into WEMU’s commitment to serving a local audience.

For any parent, there is nothing worse than the thought of losing a child. There are far too many dealing with such loss. Julie Halpert is among those living that life but also working to make sure the loss of her son is not in vain. Garrett Halpert died by suicide at the age of 23. Since then, she and her husband Scott Halpert have been developing a safe place to help young adults in need. It’s called "Garrett’s Space" and will be located on 77 acres in Superior Township. Julie Halpert joined WEMU's David Fair to provide an update on its progress.

We all know that air pollution is bad for the environment and our health. A new study out of the University of Michigan now shows that it is contributing to a loss of independence among older adults. The study also shows that the economic impact of that loss comes in at an estimate of over $11 billion. WEMU's David Fair spoke with the lead author of the study, Dr. Sara Adar, about the findings.

Some inspired volunteers will soon go “Over the Edge” on the Eastern Michigan University campus. On August 17th, you’ll see some folks rappelling down the side of Hill Hall. They’re raising money for the Ypsilanti-based non-profit, Friends In Deed, which works to reduce poverty and help people that fall through the cracks.
