One of the most pressing issues on college campuses is student mental health. Universities continue to invest in services and programs. At Eastern Michigan University, an effort has been launched to develop and implement a strategic mental health action plan. The task force is just beginning its work on the plan that is being called “Building a Community of Caring.” WEMU's David Fair talks about its goals and aspirations with Dr. Ronald Flowers. He is an EMU professor and chair of the task force.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer released her state budget proposal for the new fiscal year that begins October 1st. It includes more money for public universities. As WEMU’s Taylor Bowie reports, at Eastern Michigan University the proposed increase may not be much more than an offset.

The WEMU newsroom today picked up some community chatter that indicated there may be changes coming to the Ypsilanti Police Department. The word was, later this month, Ypsilanti police would stop patrolling between 2 AM and 6 AM, and the Michigan State Police would respond to emergencies during those hours. Ypsilanti Mayor Nicole Brown joined WEMU’s David Fair to set the record straight.

Michigan primary elections are just about a month away. This will be the earliest the state has held its primary and marks the first time early in-person voting will be allowed. There is an educational process that needs to take place for everyone, but there is a concentrated effort on getting the student vote out on college campuses around the state. “Driven by the Dream” — that’s the theme of this year’s MLK Day celebrations at Eastern Michigan University. The keynote address at the annual president’s luncheon on Monday will be delivered by the honorable Victoria Pratt. The former Chief Judge of Newark Municipal Courts in New Jersey is internationally renowned for her efforts to transform the judicial system. Her book, “The Power of Dignity,” makes the case that transforming justice will heal our communities.
