More than a quarter of all Michigan communities had pension or health care systems that were under-funded in 2017, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury.  The department says 247 communities had systems that were under-funded, totaling about $19 billion.

Healthy Michigan means better credit for Michigan’s low-income residents.  That’s according to a new study on the state’s Medicaid expansion released Monday.  It found that people on the plan improved their financial health since getting the insurance coverage.

Attorneys for convicted serial sexual predator Larry Nassar were back in court Thursday.  Nassar is the former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics sports doctor who sexually assaulted his patients under the guise of treatment for decades.

Two measures that were headed to the November ballot are now law.  The state Legislature voted to increase the state’s minimum wage and allow employees to get earned sick time.  However, the laws do not take immediate effect.  Some supporters of the proposals are now concerned about what the Legislature will do next.

Michigan dairy farmers are getting a $510 million boost.  Two new dairy processing facilities are scheduled to be built in St. Johns, north of Lansing.  The plants are expected to create more than 250 new jobs.


Race For Michigan Governor Set For November

Republican Bill Schuette and Democrat Gretchen Whitmer will battle it out for the governor’s seat in November.  Libertarians also had a choice for governor on the primary ticket for the first time in Michigan’s history.

A state law that allows tax dollars to go to private and parochial schools is making its way through the courts.  The Michigan Court of Appeals heard arguments in the lawsuit against the state on Tuesday.


Former State Representative Jeff Irwin will be favored to win the 18th District State Senate seat in November. The Ann Arborite won the Democratic Primary race by 239 votes over Washtenaw County Commissioner Michelle Deatrick. He also beat out Anuja Rajendra and Mathew Millerin the Democratic primary.

John James has won the right to try and unseat Incumbent Senator Debbie Stabenow in November. The businessman and military veteran defeated Sandy Pensler in the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate.   Stabenow was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Democrat Gretchen Whitmer has defeated two other candidates in the primary and will move on to the November general election. Whitmer recieved the majority of party support in defeating Abdul El-Sayed and Shri Thanedar.

Republican Bill Schuette has won the primary race for Governor and will move on to the November general election. The current state Attorney General defeated Lt. Governor Brian Calley, State Senator Patrick Colbeck and Dr. Jim Hines.  

A current state senator is likely to become the next representative for the 55th State House District. Rebekah Warren is being term-limited out of the senate. She was elected to the senate while serving as the 53rd District State House Representative and, under term-limit law, is eligible to serve one more term in the House.
