Ann Arbor Public Schools are getting ready to make changes in graduation requirements that all students complete a course in personal finance.
The move comes from legislation passed by the state in 2022 that changed the mathematics requirements to include a course in financial literacy beginning with the class of 2028.
The requirement is half-a-credit. Six of the seven personal standards required are already part of the Ann Arbor Schools’ economic course.
Here’s Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, Dawn Linden.
“For us and for many other districts in the state of Michigan, the simplest and easiest path forward is to embed personal finance credit within the existing economics course.”
Linden says the state allows students to earn their required economics and personal finance credits simultaneously.
