The U.S. military is doing a much better job of saving lives on the battlefield and providing the care that allows more soldiers to survive. When those fighting men and women return home, they often have difficulty in finding the services that allow for a more complete recovery and reintegration into society. WEMU's David Fair talked to two gentleman who have made it their mission to provide such care. They represent different organizations but with like-minded goals. John Cornack is the President and CEO of the Ann Arbor-based Eisenhower Center and Dave Woodruff is Chairman of the Board of the national Bob Woodruff Foundation.

June is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month.  The VA Hospital in Ann Arbor is offering help to those in need.

The LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor is attracting thousands of golf aficionados.  And as Memorial Day approaches, veterans are being offered resources at the event.

An annual report from the state Supreme Court says specialty courts that focus on veterans, people with mental illnesses, and those with substance abuse problems are reducing re-offense rates, and saving taxpayers money.

As the month of March, celebrated as Women's History Month, comes to a close, it's an opportunity to talk about some of the changes that are now taking place due to the growing number of women in the military.  WEMU's Lisa Barry reports on how that is impacting the Veteran's Affairs Hospital in Ann Arbor.


To help address the transportation needs of veterans in our state, AmeriCorps and the Michigan Region 10 Veterans Community Action Team has started a program called Wheels for Warriors.

State attorney general's office unveils law guides for vets and military personnel

Michigan veterans and active duty military families now have new resources to help handle legal issues. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette released two new legal guides Thursday.

"Sometimes trying to help veterans in transition coming back from a deployment, it can get a bit complicated," said Schuette.

Washtenaw County officials are creating a new photo identification card to help area veterans get discounts from local businesses. WEMU's Andrew Cluley reports.
